Most website builders will happily build you a site. Fewer will happily let you leave with it.
Lock-in is the quiet cost
Plenty of platforms produce a site that only exists inside their system. Stop paying and it disappears — and there's no meaningful way to take the work elsewhere. You weren't buying a website; you were renting one.
That's fine, right up until you outgrow the platform, want a developer to extend it, or simply want to move. Then the cost arrives all at once.
What real ownership looks like
- Your content is yours. The words and images you brought never transfer to the platform.
- Your domain is yours. Registered to you, pointed wherever you like.
- You can export. Real files you can host anywhere, available whenever you ask — not on request, not after a support ticket.
- No hostage-taking. If you cancel, you get a fair window to take a copy.
What to check before you commit
Before you build anything substantial on a platform, look for a clear answer to three questions: can I export my site, who owns the code, and what happens if I stop paying? If those answers are hard to find, that's the answer.
Our own policy is deliberately short and lives on a page called Ownership & Export. Your content, your site, exportable any time. We'd rather earn the renewal every month than trap anyone into it.
